Between 2007 and 2019, he was Associate Professor of Sociology at Beijing Normal University (China).
From 2005, Dr Miège has studied different aspects of the transformation of Chinese urban society, especially from the point of view of public health. More specifically, he has studied the reform of the Chinese health care system in response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic and the obstacles to accessing healthcare for people living with the virus. At the same time, Dr Miège has directed pioneering research about men who have sex with men (MSM) in various cities, to understand how they organize their lives and articulate changing and often contradicting social norms. The findings from these research projects he has directed have been published in major international journals, such as PLOS ONE, Archives of Sexual Behavior, and lately Culture, Health and Sexuality. Dr Miège is currently building on the knowledge collected through these different projects to question the transformation of social norms and the emergence of the individual in urban China.
