AIDS Concern World AIDS Day 2013 Mall Event

Spreading the “I'M Positive” message in Hong Kong

 

Today (1 Dec 2013), AIDS Concern organized a public event commemorating the World AIDS Day 2013 at Windsor House, Causeway Bay. The event is co-organized with Metro Radio and title-sponsored by Durex. It is joined by Mrs. Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet Ngor, Chief Secretary for Administration; Dr. York Chow Yat Ngok, Chairperson of the Equal Opportunities Commission; Mr. Shiu Ka Chun, Lecturer & Associate of Arts in Applied Social Service of Hong Kong Baptist university; Artists including Ms. Siu Yam Yam, Corinna Chamberlain and Kellyjackie. To echo with the theme of “I’M Positive”, all of the guests were invited to put up one of the letters of the “I’M Positive” statement on a giant Red Ribbon, symbolizing their supports and commitments to the campaign.

 

Mr. Andrew Chidgey, Chief Executive of AIDS Concern, said that thousands of People are living with HIV (PLHIV) in Hong Kong but most of them hide their identity of HIV Positive because of stigma and discrimination. He therefore encouraged the public to be more positive about PLHIV and vulnerable communities.

 

Mrs. Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet Ngor shared a similar view with Mr. Andrew Chidgey. She also acknowledged the hard work of AIDS Concern in public education on HIV/AIDS and support services for the needed communities.

 

Likewise, Dr. York Chow Yat Ngok pointed out that HIV/AIDS is preventable and controllable. He emphasized that the public need to learn more about how to protect themselves and to care for PLHIV. Most importantly, public have to respect their rights to lead a normal life without prejudice or discrimination.

 

A Condom Donation Ceremony was held on the event. Durex representative, Mr. Vincent Wong, Marketing Director (Hong Kong & Taiwan) of Reckitt Benckiser, donated 5,000 condoms to recognize and support the prevention work of AIDS Concern.

 

Apart from having guests to share their views on HIV/AIDS, Corinna Chamberlain and Kellyjackie sang on the event to promote the “I’M Positive” too. The interactive exhibition panels introduced HIV/AIDS knowledge and “I’M Positive” photo-taking activities successfully attracted hundreds of citizens.
