HIV and Corporate Social Responsibility

Currently there are 34 million people living with HIV (PLHIV) around the world. In some African countries, the staff morale and productivity in some companies are already affected, as a large number of employees are infected with HIV/AIDS or passed away due to AIDS. In Hong Kong, a cumulative total of 5,523 HIV infections have been reported from 1984 to June 2012. Although the prevalence of HIV/AIDS in Hong Kong is low, corporates may still be confronted with discrimination against PLHIV in the workplace due to inadequate knowledge of HIV and unnecessary fears. Employers can play an important role  in educating their staff about HIV, creating better understanding of minority groups, promoting non-discrimination practices and creating PLHIV friendly environment that shows a sense of humanity in the workplace.
